Recent findings show that functional lymphatic drainage exists in the brain. Until this recent research breakthrough, western medicine thought both the brain and central nervous system were completely devoid of lymphatic vessels. These tiny meningeal lymph vessels drain dangerous toxins from the brain and has proven to be a game-changer. It was once believed that the vertebrate brain functions normally without classical lymphatic drainage vessels. Congestion of these vessels has been linked to cognitive decline, mood issues, inflammation, autoimmune concerns and more.


The brain lymphatic drainage system is composed of a basement membrane-based perivascular pathway; a brain-wide glymphatic pathway; and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage routes including sinus-associated meningeal lymphatic vessels and olfactory/cervical lymphatic routes.


The brain lymphatic system’s first physiological function is to provide a route of drainage for interstitial fluid (ISF) from brain parenchyma to nearby lymph nodes. Brain lymphatic drainage helps maintain water and ion balance of the ISF, waste clearance, and reabsorption of macromolecular solutes. Communication with the immune system and modulating immune surveillance and responses of the brain are among other physiological functions. These functions are influenced by aging, genetic phenotypes, sleep-wake cycle, and body posture.


The impairment and dysfunction of the brain lymphatic system has crucial roles in age-related changes of brain function and the pathogenesis of neurovascular, neurodegenerative, and neuroinflammatory diseases.


Scientists speculate that disruptions in the glymphatic system might lead to the buildup of harmful waste in the brain. In patients with Alzheimer’s disease, a protein called amyloid beta accumulates in the brain and damages cells.

Bacopa Tea


Primarily used as a cognitive enhancer, our Bacopa Monnieri (“Bacopa”) is one of the oldest and most well-respected nootropic supplements. Though it works over time by a variety of functions, bacopa generally improves memory and cognitive abilities by improving synaptic communication. It enhances the growth and proliferation of “dendrites”, the branched nerve cell extensions along which neural impulses travel, enhancing neural signaling. This improved neural impulse transmission is a key to cognitive enhancement.


Bacopa-A, the active ingredient in bacopa monnieri extract, has been shown to stimulate nerve cells and make synapses more receptive to nerve impulses. Studies show that Bacoside-A, one of bacopa’s active ingredients, is also known to support the activity of GABA, a powerful neurotransmitter that acts to prevent anxiety by restricting the firing of neurons that are over-excited by stress.

Breathing Technique


Significant  cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow or brain cleansing has been linked to deep breathing exercises. Studies show a specific boost in CSF flow during inspiration (inhalation), and even more during forced inspiration.


This research supports the predicted benefits of pranayama or yogic breathing exercises. This exercise can significantly increase the meditative brain wave (alpha) activity during nose breathing versus mouth breathing. Mouth breathing was linked to increased “fight or flight” stress and sympathetic nervous system activity, and nose breathing was linked to an increase of parasympathetic nervous system activity – also called the “rest, repair, and digest” nervous system.

Fight or flight stress has been linked to a reduction of CSF flow, while parasympathetic activation has been linked to a boost in CSF flow, making nose breathing exercise and yogic critical practices for better CSF and brain lymph flow.


Remember, a boost in CSF flow supports better brain lymph drainage. Yoga, nasal breathing exercise and meditation are all linked to boosting CSF flow.

Nasya Treatment


This Ayurvedic technique called “nasya,” is when herbalized oils are sniffed into the nasal mucosa. This technique was designed to cleanse the brain lymphatics, called “rasa,” and the brain ventricles and sinuses, called “tarpaka.”

This is done in an attempt to clean out lymphatic vessels in the brain – called sagittal sinus. The sagittal sinus is just under the skull on the top of the head in the pattern of a Mohawk haircut.
