Detox Your Brain?

Let’s face it. We live in a toxic world.

Mercury Contamination

Pesticides

BPA

Everyday we are unknowingly exposed to hazardous toxins like lead, mercury, benzene, pesticides, or BPA found in industrial plastics. Add to that, many of us have been socialized to use neurotoxins like fluoride on a daily basis. Vaccines, dental procedures, MSG, artificial sweeteners, and much of our supply of fish and chicken contain heavy metals that can be detected in our bodies and brains. These toxins expose us to increased risks of disease, deteriorating quality of life, medical costs, and loss of cognitive function.

You may have heard about colon detox or liver detox, but what about brain detox?! We rarely hear about detoxifying the brain, but a decline in brain function is a common complaint many folks experience and the multitude of related symptoms can be due to brain toxicity.

Reduce your risks today

  • Identify your exposure to harmful toxins and reduce your exposure where you can.

  • Implement a few behavioral changes to assist with your body’s natural ability to stay on course to function at an optimal level.

Congestion and Clogging

How Our Brain Lymphatic Drainage System Works

Toxic Air Pollution and Alzheimers

Flow of Cerebrospinal Fluid in the Brain

Recent findings show that functional lymphatic drainage exists in the brain. Until this recent research breakthrough, western medicine thought both the brain and central nervous system were completely devoid of lymphatic vessels. These tiny meningeal lymph vessels drain dangerous toxins from the brain and has proven to be a game-changer. It was once believed that the vertebrate brain functions normally without classical lymphatic drainage vessels. Congestion of these vessels has been linked to cognitive decline, mood issues, inflammation, autoimmune concerns and more.

The brain lymphatic drainage system is composed of a basement membrane-based perivascular pathway; a brain-wide glymphatic pathway; and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) drainage routes including sinus-associated meningeal lymphatic vessels and olfactory/cervical lymphatic routes.

The brain lymphatic system’s first physiological function is to provide a route of drainage for interstitial fluid (ISF) from brain parenchyma to nearby lymph nodes. Brain lymphatic drainage helps maintain water and ion balance of the ISF, waste clearance, and reabsorption of macromolecular solutes. Communication with the immune system and modulating immune surveillance and responses of the brain are among other physiological functions. These functions are influenced by aging, genetic phenotypes, sleep-wake cycle, and body posture.

The impairment and dysfunction of the brain lymphatic system has crucial roles in age-related changes of brain function and the pathogenesis of neurovascular, neurodegenerative, and neuroinflammatory diseases.

Scientists speculate that disruptions in the glymphatic system might lead to the buildup of harmful waste in the brain. In patients with Alzheimer’s disease, a protein called amyloid beta accumulates in the brain and damages cells.

Bacopa Tea

Primarily used as a cognitive enhancer, our Bacopa Monnieri (“Bacopa”) is one of the oldest and most well-respected nootropic supplements. Though it works over time by a variety of functions, bacopa generally improves memory and cognitive abilities by improving synaptic communication. It enhances the growth and proliferation of “dendrites”, the branched nerve cell extensions along which neural impulses travel, enhancing neural signaling. This improved neural impulse transmission is a key to cognitive enhancement.

Bacopa-A, the active ingredient in bacopa monnieri extract, has been shown to stimulate nerve cells and make synapses more receptive to nerve impulses. It also increases the production of the enzyme Tryptophan Hydroxylase (TPH2) which is crucial to a number of central nervous system activities, including the biosynthesis of serotonin.

Bacopa is also thought to stimulate activity in the hippocampus by increasing the activity of kinases, proteins that regulate cellular pathways. Because the hippocampus is integrally involved in virtually all cognitive activity, this is believed to be one of the most important ways in which Bacopa boosts brain power.

Bacopa produces its characteristic calming effects through several actions. One of its most important anti-anxiety effects lies in its ability to modulate the activity of specific neurotransmitter receptors, including those that regulate the uptake of serotonin, which is strongly associated with mood and and anxiety management.

Studies show that Bacoside-A, one of bacopa’s active ingredients, is also known to support the activity of GABA, a powerful neurotransmitter that acts to prevent anxiety by restricting the firing of neurons that are over-excited by stress.

Step #2

Open pathways to relieve blockages

Reiki

Reiki is utilized to open pathways to assist with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow for our Brain Detox treatment plan. This universal, invisible energy is within us and all around us. Energy healing is a safe and natural way to work within energy fields so the body can access its powerful ability to heal. When an energy healing practitioner scans a person before a session, she looks for blockages and excesses. Energy healing is a safe and effective modality that complements other approaches in the multidimensional field of healing.

Reiki is a brain friendly practice for many reasons. The first amongst many is the importance of tender, loving touch and the presence of another caring person from the perspective of the brain. Neuroscience research now provides exciting discoveries on the impact in which sensory practices like Reiki can have on the brain and its many needs.

Step #3

Improve blood flow and lymphatic circulation

Intranasal Red Light Therapy

Deep penetration of red light beyond the skin’s surface has numerous benefits.

Just like the body’s natural response to heat is to dilate blood vessels, it does the same when exposed to red light. This widening of blood vessels reduces resistance to the blood flow. Therefore it improves the rate at which it can move around the body. This is a great benefit because the restriction of blood flow can cause cells to be starved of oxygen. Lack of oxygen, which is called ischemia, can permanently damage tissues, particularly in the muscles as it can kill cells, some of which cannot be replaced such as muscle cells.

The improved blood flow and lymphatic circulation aid the removal of waste products from the lymphatic system. This reduces and prevents the build-up of fluids which can cause edema, therefore reducing pain associated with swelling and can even enhance the healing mechanisms.

Step #4

Improve circulation and lubricate respiratory passages

Massage and Steam Infused with Eucalyptus

Our body’s blood vessels start dilating when the body’s temperature increases. This further helps in an enhanced blood flow and a better circulation of the blood. A better circulation is known to be beneficial in treatment of headaches and migraines. Thus the benefits or the wonders of steam inhalation are also extended towards the improved circulation and treating migraines and serious headaches. Rise in body temperature can also be beneficial in stimulating the immune system and increasing the immune power in fighting against the germs.

An expectorant such as eucalyptus also increases the amount of secretion and helps in clearing this secretion and lubricating respiratory passages. This process is also beneficial in improving conditions in your throat and lungs.

Step #5

Increase Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) Flow

Breathing Technique

Significant  cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow or brain cleansing has been linked to deep breathing exercises. Studies show a specific boost in CSF flow during inspiration (inhalation), and even more during forced inspiration.

This research supports the predicted benefits of pranayama or yogic breathing exercises. This exercise can significantly increase the meditative brain wave (alpha) activity during nose breathing versus mouth breathing. Mouth breathing was linked to increased “fight or flight” stress and sympathetic nervous system activity, and nose breathing was linked to an increase of parasympathetic nervous system activity – also called the “rest, repair, and digest” nervous system.

Fight or flight stress has been linked to a reduction of CSF flow, while parasympathetic activation has been linked to a boost in CSF flow, making nose breathing exercise and yogic critical practices for better CSF and brain lymph flow.

Remember, a boost in CSF flow supports better brain lymph drainage. Yoga, nasal breathing exercise and meditation are all linked to boosting CSF flow.

Step #6

Clean lymphatic vessels in the sagittal sinus

Nasya Treatment

This Ayurvedic technique called “nasya,” is when herbalized oils are sniffed into the nasal mucosa. This technique was designed to cleanse the brain lymphatics, called “rasa,” and the brain ventricles and sinuses, called “tarpaka.”

This is done in an attempt to clean out lymphatic vessels in the brain – called sagittal sinus. The sagittal sinus is just under the skull on the top of the head in the pattern of a Mohawk haircut.

This treatment supports mental clarity, memory, and the flushing of old toxic emotions. Ancient Ayurvedic text suggests that brain congestion is directly linked to neurological as well as old emotional concerns. It is said that these lymphatic vessels constrict as a result of trauma, with the consequence of burying the memory of these traumatic experiences. This process allows us to move through these traumas and continue with our lives.

While this technique has been practiced for thousands of years, it has only been a few months since Western medicine discovered the lymphatic vessels in the sagittal sinus that literally drain the brain. Until this research, Western medicine thought both brain and central nervous system were completely devoid of lymphatic vessels.
